HONG KONG RUCK CLUB
It worked now exactly as it couldn’t have 25 years ago. There’s a solid Ruck Club in Hong Kong that meets weekly (or more) for some rucking and some training and some socializing. Paul and I took a short flight (from Saigon) to help run a GORUCK Ingress event and sync up with the HK Ruck Club in the former British colony.
Of course, twenty five years ago there was no GORUCK, no Ruck Clubs, and when I traveled around I never actually figured out how to meet people, so I spent a lot of time alone in museums and just walking around. A less exciting way to see a city, but still not bad. This way is better.
Night one, we met up for dinner downtown in a former British police station next to what used to be Victoria Prison (it’s a museum now). It’s fully gentrified with $10+ Stellas on draft and plenty of high fashion in the air. Oh the conflict in the air. Similar to how when you go to Place de la Concorde in Paris and you see all the tourists and all the ice cream and all the selfies, it’s easy to forget how those stones used to run with revolutionary blood.
Same there as here as downtown Hong Kong — one generation’s revolution is another generation’s baseline and at some point you just want another $10+ Stella and let’s get on with it. To our own revolutions, I mean.
So, back to the present. Fitness unites us. Fitness together cuts through all barriers even better than just travel. Meet the people in the park and do the working out, then go drink the coffee at the Starbucks next to the Bruce Lee statue. Talk about the world, talk about the differences, listen and then ask more questions. Smile. What a great crew, huge thanks to our gracious hosts in Hong Kong.
