Celebrating Independence with a British Intern

Happy Birthday, AMERICA

We have a British intern named Joel this summer, he’s into soccer and cricket and tea. Other than that, he fits right in. As a bunch of us were talking about how to celebrate Independence Day with flags waving high and fun under rucks, Joel casually said that his “mates back at uni” would disown him if they saw a picture of him dressed in our flag, “or anyfing like that.” He’s learning a lot at GORUCK, but still struggling to avoid a well laid trap. We had a company wide relay race, complete with patriotic costumes. Stars and Stripes and Flags, and it wasn’t optional. At least for his sake, nobody got a picture of him in the George Washington shirt that said “It’s only treason if you lose”.

This Independence Day, first off - have fun. Second off, hanging out with people your ancestors would have fought to the death can be a lot of fun. It’s what makes America America, and I’m proud to be from this country and to call it home. Hope you all have a great 4th with family, friends, and some heavy rucks. And that you don’t get disowned, no matter the pictures someone shares.
